100th Anniversary Shostakovich

September marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer Dimitri Shostakovich. Born on September 25 - or September 12 according the old style calendar - in St. Petersburg, Shostakovich’s influence can be seen as a thread running through the ECM New Series, both through his own pieces and his impact on Post-Soviet composers such as Giya Kancheli, Arvo Pärt, Valentin Silvestrov, Erkki-Sven Tüür, as well as on performers like Gidon Kremer and Alexei Lubimov.

In ECM New Series there are eight recordings which include compositions of Shostakovich. These releases strongly represent Shostakovich’s later chamber works for strings, and feature world-class performers including, among others: Thomas Demenga, Kim Kashkashian, Gidon Kremer, Alexei Lubimov, Thomas Zehetmair, Rosamunde Quartett, and The Keller Quartett.

From Shostakovich’s piano compositions, Keith Jarrett’s recording of the 24 Preludes and Fugues op. 87 has received numerous awards and accolades from the international classical press, including these comments from John Rockwell in The New York Times: “With this recording, Mr. Jarrett has finally staked an indisputable claim to distinction in the realm of classical music…. Mr. Jarrett, having long since established himself in jazz, can now be called a classical pianist of the first rank.”

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dimitri Shostakovich, for a limited time only, to September 30, we offer these eight titles at a 20% discount.
