Best of 2006 Awards for Abbuehl, Trio Beyond, Jarrett
As Christmas approaches, the world’s magazines and newspapers issue their best-of- 2006 lists and select their Albums of the Year.
The first such notices to reach us this year come from France where, we are pleased to say, Susanne Abbuehl’s “Compass” and Trio Beyond’s “Saudades” are each awarded the ‘Disque d'émoi de l'année’ by Jazz Magazine. The choice of these two discs says something about the range of ‘jazz’ on ECM today. Swiss/Dutch singer Abbuehl’s disc is a subtle ‘chamber’ album, incorporating settings of James Joyce and William Carlos Williams, new versions of the folk songs Luciano Berio loved, low-key covers of Sun Ra, Chick Corea, and more. The Trio Beyond disc, meanwhile, is as outgoing as Abbuehl’s disc is intimate. This full-throttle live recording by Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield and Larry Goldings, loudly celebrates the life and music of Tony Williams.
Another live set, this time on DVD, is the ‘Choc de l'année’ of the magazine Jazzman: Keith Jarrett’s “Tokyo Solo”, documentation of the pianist’s improvised solo concert at the Japanese capital’s Metropolitan Festival Hall.
