Bobo Stenson wins European Jazz Prize

In Vienna last weeekend Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson was presented with the European Jazz Prize 2006. This major award, presented in the context of the Hans Koller Preis 2006, comes with a cash prize of EUR 14.500 from the City of Vienna.

The presentation ceremony was held at the Porgy and Bess Club on December 1, where Bobo played a short piano solo, following up the next day with a full-fledged trio concert.

The prize jury’s citation drew attention to the “mix of lyricism and abstraction” that has distinguished Stenson’s work from the beginning of his association with ECM, in many different contexts – including his own albums a s a leader, the collaborative recordings with Jan Garbarek in the 19790s (“Sart”, “Witchi-Tai-To”, “Dansere”), and albums with Don Cherry (“Dona Nostra”) and Charles Lloyd (“Fish Out of Water”, “Notes from Big Sur”, “The Call”, “All My Relations”, and “Canto”) .

Bobo Stenson’s most recent album under his own name is “Goodbye”, with Paul Motian and Anders Jormin. Last year he was also heard on recordings with the Swedish:Norwegian collective Parish and with saxophonist Martin Speake (with whom he tours the UK in January – see Tours page for details).
