Song for Tarkovsky in Munich
“Nostalghia – Song for Tarkovsky”, pianist François Couturier’s tribute to Andrei Tarkovsky, has received much critical praise for the imaginative way in which the music evokes the atmospheres and emotions of the Russian director’s films.
Couturier sees the films as “long poems, hypnotic in their slowness, and pervaded with spirituality”, and the music he has written for his quartet embodies similar qualities. The group, with Anja Lechner (cello), Jean-Marc Larcher (saxophone), and Jean-Louis Matinier (accordion), was one of the successes of last year’s ECM Festival in Dinant, Belgium. At the end of the year, and in association with the Instituto Internazionale Andrej Tarkovskij, the group played a special concert in Florence on December 29 to mark the 20th anniversary of Tarkovsky’s death.
Their next concert is in Munich, ECM’s hometown, where they play the Allerheiligenhofkirche der Residenz on Saturday February 3. The concert begins at 8 o’clock.
