A Norwegian ‘jazz canon’

At the invitation of Norway’s Music Information Centre, the country’s “most influential and august jazz critics” came together to vote on a “canonical list” of the twenty most important jazz albums made by Norwegians.

ECM discs figured prominently, with the Jan Garbarek Quartet’s “Afric Pepperbird” – the 1970 album that helped to bring Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen to the attention of the wider world – at number one. Nils Petter Molvaer’s “Khmer” (1997) is, in this “subjective ranking”, at number two, and “Witchi-Tai-To” (1973) by the Jan Garbarek-Bobo Stenson Quartet is number seven. Other albums in this Critics Top 20 include Terje Rypdal’s “Chaser” (1985) and “Sagn” (1990) by Arild Andersen. The full list, with the critics’ judgements, is here.
