Der blaue Klang. 40 years ECM
ECM festival in Mannheim, 22-25 October 2009

A special four-day event honouring ECM’s 40 year history will take place at Mannheim Castle from 22nd to 25th October, in the wider context of the Enjoy Jazz Festival. Its programme brings together artists and ensembles from a broad spectrum of the label’s catalogue, including the New Series.
Alongside the concerts, the festival incorporates a rare screening of “Holozän”, the film by Heinz Bütler and Manfred Eicher inspired by Max Frisch’s novella, and an international symposium in which leading critics and musicologists will address ECM’s role in the ongoing dialogue between American and European jazz, as well as changing relationships between improvisation and contemporary composition.

Der blaue Klang. 40 Jahre ECM
ECM-Festival in Mannheim vom 22. bis 25. Oktober 2009
Herzstück des diesjährigen 11. internationalen Enjoy Jazz Festivals in Mannheim, Heidelberg und Ludwigshafen ist vom 22. bis 25. Oktober ein Sonderfestival zum 40-jährigen Bestehen des Labels ECM. Alle Konzerte finden in den attraktiven Räumen des Mannheimer Schlosses/Universität Mannheim statt. Zu hören sind Künstler und Formationen aus dem gesamten Katalogspektrum inklusive der New Series.
Am Freitag, 23. Oktober, wird im Atlantis-Kino in Mannheim der Film „Holozän“ von Heinz Bütler und Manfred Eicher gezeigt, eine filmische Umsetzung der Erzählung „Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän“ von Max Frisch.
Am Samstag, 24. Oktober, widmet sich ein prominent besetztes Symposium unter dem Titel „The Blue Moment“ der Bedeutung des Labels ECM für die Entwicklung des europäisch-amerikanischen Musikdialogs und für die Integration des zeitgenössischen Jazz und der zeitgenössischen E-Musik.
Das Sonderfestival, zentrales Ereignis zum Jubiläum des 1969 von Manfred Eicher gegründeten und bis heute geleiteten Labels, wird großzügig gefördert durch die Kulturstiftung des Bundes.
Enjoy Jazz wird am 2. Oktober eröffnet mit einem Konzert des Charles Lloyd Quartet. Darüber hinaus treten im Verlauf des insgesamt sechswöchigen Festivals folgende ECM-Künstler auf: Mathias Eick Quartet (4. Oktober), Nik Bärtsch solo (11. Oktober), Cyminology (13. Oktober), Jan Garbarek Group (20. Oktober) und das Tord Gustavsen Ensemble (7. November).
