Kuára wins Emma Award
“Kuára”, ECM debut of the Finnish-Norwegian trio of Marrku Ounaskari, Samuli Mikkonen and Per Jørgensen has won a major prize in Finland, the Jazz Emma Award for Jazz Album of the Year. We quote: “The music of the trio of drummer Markku Ounaskari, pianist Samuli Mikkonen, and Norwegian trumpeter-singer Per Jørgensen is a contemporary continuation of the tradition of Nordic jazz. The jury described the album as a journey to the Finnic folk musics in Russia by the means of jazz. The jury commends it also for its sensibility and strong vision, as well as the ability to offer atmospheres both familiar and foreign.” The award, considered a Grammy equivalent in the Far North, is not often given to non-Finnish productions, although ECM recordings have won it before, the last occasion being in 1992, for the album “Volition” by Raoul Björkenhim’s band Krakatau.
