Gubaidulina Venice Golden Lion Award

Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina has received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Music at the Biennale di Venezia. The Award Ceremony took place during the 57th International Festival of Contemporary Music in Venice.

Biennale director Ivan Fedele commented that the Golden Lion for Gubaidulina “acknowledges the outstanding artistic and human values of a woman who, because of her non-conformist aesthetic choices, had to struggle against the political power of the USSR .... Nevertheless, she was able to count on the support and patronage of Dmitri Shostakovich, who encouraged her to follow what had been defined as a ‘mistaken path’... Sofia Gubaidulina continued to express herself with extreme coherence and freedom, offering the entire world pages of highly inspired music permeated by a spirituality that is both delicate and incandescent.”

Previous prizewinners have included Goffredo Petrassi (1994), Luciano Berio (1995), Friedrich Cerha (2006), Giacomo Manzoni (2007), Helmut Lachenmann (2008), György Kurtág (2009), Wolfgang Rihm (2010), Peter Eötvös (2011) and Pierre Boulez (2012).

Sofia Gubaildulina’s ECM recordings include Canticle of the Sun, with Gidon Kremer, Kremerata Baltica and the Riga Chamber Choir, and Seven Words/Ten Preludes/De Profundis, with Elsbeth Moser, Boris Pergamenschikow and the Munchner Kammerorchester. Most recently Gubaidulina’s Chaconne was included on pianist Anna Gourari’s recital disc Canto Oscuro.
