International project ‘Il Pergolese’ off to a great start

The November concert premieres for the Italian/French/German project ‘Il Pergolese’ with Maria Pia DeVito, François Couturier, Anja Lechner and Michele Rabbia in Naples’ beautiful historic church S. Maria di Donnaregina and in Rome’s Auditorium Parco della Musica have been met with great interest from Italian press.

A report from the Naples concert also appeared in the December issue of German classical music magazine Crescendo (an online version of the article can be found here: http://www.crescendo.de/pergolesi-2-0-das-ensemble-il-pergolese-1000002852/
)
The choice of Naples for a launch concert was apt: ‘Il Pergolese’ pays tribute to 18th century composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710 – 1736), and considers his relationship to the art music and the popular music of Naples, from a highly contemporary perspective. And singer Maria Pia De Vito, who makes her ECM debut with ‘Il Pergolese’, is herself a native of the city. The project was commissioned by the Festival Pergolesi-Spontini of Jesi in 2011. The improvisational component ensures that each performance of ‘Il Pergolese’ is unique.

The ‘Il Pergolese’ album, recorded in Lugano in December 2012, also now receives its first international reviews: French magazine Jazzman selects it as a ‘Choc’ (an album of the month), and British website Jazz Views gives the album an extended review (http://jazzviewscdreviews.weebly.com/november-2013.html) closing “This is a beautifully and innovative album of chamber music that brings a modern touch to music from a rich musical heritage,and presents it as art music for the 21st century.” Early 2014 concerts in France (Paris, Café de la Danse, February 14th) and Germany are in preparation.
