RPS awards for Harrison Birtwistle and Patricia Kopatchinskaja

British composer Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja have won Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards. The awards were presented in London on May 14. Birtwistle won the award for Chamber Scale Composition, while Kopatchinskaja was voted Best Instrumentalist by the 65 jurors of the RPS.

Both artists have current New Series releases. Patricia Kopatchinskaja can be heard with the Amsterdam Sinfionietta playing Tigran Mansurian’s Romance and with, Anja Lechner, the Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, on the album Quasi Parlando.

A new recording of pieces by Harrison Birtwistle, titled Chamber Music, with Adrian Brendel, Till Fellner, Lisa Batiashvilli and others, was issued last month. For Birtwistle, the RPS award was his fifth, making him the most-honoured musician in the 25 year history of the classical music prize.
