Heinz Holliger@75

Birthday greetings to Heinz Holliger, who is 75 today. ECM has been pleased to present the many facets of this exceptional artist’s work as innovative composer, peerless oboe soloist, chamber musician and conductor. The newest release is Aschenmusik, which reflects Holliger’s lifelong fascination with the music of Robert Schumann, both in performances of Schumann compositions which he has played throughout his life and in a new version of his tribute piece ‘Romancendres’, which references Schumann’s lost ‘Cello Romances’.

Holliger’s own music was first heard on ECM New Series juxtaposed with Bach cello suites on a Thomas Demenga disc in 1987. Since then there have been many encounters. We have heard his radiant oboe in contexts from Zelenka to Elliott Carter, while his creative imagination has found expression in the opera Schneewittchen, the Scardanelli cycle, portraying Hölderlin in his tower, the Violin Concerto, and works such as Alb-Chehr and Induuchlen which draw inspiration from very Swiss sources. Further recordings with Heinz Holliger are in preparation.

This year’s Lucerne Festival will include a special focus on Holliger with performances of the Scardanelli Zyklus, as well as the String Quartets played by the Zehetmair Quartett.
