Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard and Steve Swallow have won the German Record Critics’ Album of the Year prize – the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for their album Life Goes On.
The jury statement says: “The music has a warm, light-footed, light-handed beauty, which at times seems strangely abstract and deliberate. The haltingly fluid play of Bley’s right hand breathes refinement, melancholy and thoughtfulness, and miniature quotations thoroughly amuse themselves about Donald Trump. Life Goes On is a jazz album of profound precision, a hymn to life and ironic fantasy.”
The German Record Critics’ Award (“Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik”) was established in 1980 to set the “most rigorous standards for supreme achievement and quality” in the field of music recording. The German Record Critics’ Award Association consists of music critics, writers, musicologists and editors in Germany, Austria and Switzerland actively involved in the assessment of CDs and DVDs. Its stated mission is to provide producers, composers, artists and music lovers with a reliable guide to new releases of true artistic significance.
Life Goes On is the third volume of a sequence of albums begun with Trios in 2013 and continued with Andando El Tiempo (2016).
Our congratulations to Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard and Steve Swallow!
