Maciej Obara

Maciej Obara, born in Poland in 1981, formed his Norwegian-Polish quartet featuring pianist Dominik Wania, bassist Ole Morten Vagan and percussionist Gard Nilssen in 2012. The band joined the ECM roster with their fourth recording Unloved (2017), which The Guardian considered “a contemporary-jazz album of character and exhilarating drive”.

According to Swiss weekly Weltwoche’s Peter Rüedi, Obara „is a masterful, equally lyrical and expressive melodicist, whose heart-wrenching saxophone lines, with his alto-cry, cut through the air with burning vehemence”. Much critical acclaim also accompanied the quartet’s second recording Three Crowns (2019), leading the German magazine Jazzthing to call it “a class of its own!”.

Frozen Silence, the quartet’s third recording, is released in September 2023.
