The first-time teaming of Poland’s dynamic Marcin Wasilewski Trio and big-toned US tenorist Joe Lovano brings forth special music of concentrated, deep feeling, in which lyricism and strength seem ideally balanced. The alliance plays new tunes by Marcin and by Joe, as well as Carla Bley’s classic “Vashkar” (in two variations), plus collective improvisations with strong input from all players.  Slawomir Kuriewicz’s bass skills are particularly well-deployed in the spontaneous piece “Arco”.  Joe will be joining the Polish trio for a number of selected concerts in the months ahead. Arctic Riff was recorded at France’s Studio La Buissonne  in August 2019,  and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Building on ‘Trio Tapestry’, his stark ECM debut of last year, the American tenor giant teams up with one of the label’s stars, the Polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski. Yet as Lovano calms down, the risk is ramped up, especially in four safety-net-free group improvisations. On the most ambitious, ‘Cadenza’, Lovano trades droplets of melody with the bass and drums, then Wasilewski releases a torrent of notes that burst into a collective free-jazz storm. Rivulets of reflection fade into an uneasy calm. Lovano is on safer ground with Wasilewski’s ballads, such as the rippling ‘Fading Sorrow’ and the ‘Blue in Green’-like ‘Old Hat’, but it’s the untamed improvs that impress most.
Chris Pearson, The Times

Polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski’s imaginative trio meet US sax giant Joe Lovano on ‘Arctic Riff’, an ethereal, tonally luxurious meeting of hearts and minds including two accounts – one dreamy, one free-rhythmically restless – of the Carla Bley classic ‘Vashkar’.
John Fordham, The Guardian

Wasilewski speaks for most of us most probably when he says this about the opening track ‘Glimmer of Hope’: ‘I was very curious to hear how it would sound with Joe’s tone.’ That phrase is telling for the entire album, ‘Arctic Riff’. Not only does Joe Lovano bring robust, practically unmatched tone to that piece, but as we’ve learned from Lovano’s own ECM recordings and others as a leader, he brings inventiveness and his free jazz style of playing when called for as well. The trio is led by pianist Marcin Wasilewski with drummer Michal Miskiewicz and bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz.  Theirs, especially with Lovano aboard, is music of deep feeling, highly concentrated, sometimes composed but often loosely improvised, sprinkled with lyricism, quiet strength, and a serious, contemplative, but beautiful vibe that runs throughout the album. […] The trio seems emboldened by Lovano’s strong presence and their support helps to showcase his numerous strengths while they find enough space and spontaneity in this mix of the conventional and free, to express individuality as well. It’s a superlative session.

Polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski augments his crisply articulate piano trio - featuring bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz and drummer Michal Miskiewicz - with the addition of great American saxophonist Joe Lovano, who populates ‘Arctic Riff’ with his burnished saxophone literacy. […] Even when exploring boundlessly, the quartet embraces a fluid style leavened by a wonderful sense of space. As a key to our contentment, the sounds are not just meticulous but also consistently surprising.

This is an inspired meeting between the Polish Trio and US tenor maestro, and despite the title the music is anything but chilly. A first time pairing it might be, but the music recorded by the four musicians is a joy to behold. Broad in scope, superbly programmed, and deeply exploratory it almost feels as if as listeners we are privy to eavesdropping on a unique performance and meeting of minds. […] Lovano's big sound and warm tone on the tenor is embraced by the trio, and it is quickly apparent that there is a special connection. Wasilewski's piano sets the mood wonderfully for the saxophonist's entry on the opening 'Glimmer Of Hope', a rubato ballad that shows both strength and beauty. A trait that is found throughout this set. […] With 'Arctic Riff' we are presented with a meeting of kindred spirits, and the Marcin Wasilewski trio have brought forth some of Lovano's most committed playing in a set that should not be missed.
Nick Lea, Jazzviews

The Marcin Wasilewski Trio, a Polish ensemble that initially came together during the 90’s, specializes in controlled blasts – little bursts of freeform creation like the nine-minute ‘Cadenza’ that builds off a tumbling piano line and agitated bass work from Slawomir Kurkiewcz. Adding fuel to this collective fire is saxophonist Joe Lovano. He appears on all 11tracks on ‘Arctic Riff’ and handles the gig with a remarkable amount of restraint. Lovano carefully picks his moments to draw focus away from the collective, as though his dancing, halting solo on Wasilewski’s ‘L’amour Fou.’ Or his eventual appearance on his own composition, ‘On The Side.’ Lovano waits until the song is in its final minutes before sneaking in to add some punctuation to what was shaping up to be a complete statement by the trio. Label boss Manfred Eicher’s devotion to atmosphere also is responsible for allowing the finer details of ‘Arctic Riff’ to emerge. […] The music becomes as enveloping and inescapable, yet imperceptible, as oxygen.
Robert Ham, Downbeat

A perfect combination of the Polish piano trio with the subtle-to-swinging approach of the sax veteran. This set of mostly originals exploits a compare-and-contrast approach to excellent effect while making the best possible use of Lovano’s gracefully omnivorous style.
Roger Thomas, BBC Music Magazine (five out of five stars)

Marcin Wasilewski’s brand of trio playing continues to be captivating.  The bond of Kurkiewicz and Miskiewicz continues to be palpable, and the pianist’s knack for great melody and resourcefulness as an improviser is impressive.  Adding Joe Lovano to the mix is an inspired pairing that one would hope will continue. He adds just a bit more fire and inquisitiveness that keeps the exploratory nature of the trio highly attuned. ‘Arctic Riff’ is one of the finest releases of the year thus far.

The Marcin Wasilewski Trio defines an approach associated with the legendary ECM label: the musical goal is to savor the moment by way of subtly shifting dynamics and delicately enriched harmonies. This Polish threesome has mastered the strategy, creating soundscapes that are right for our age of virus-induced anxiety: edgy restlessness yearning for a refined pensiveness. Enter, as a guest, tenor sax master Joe Lovano on ‘Arctic Riff’, the trio’s latest disc. The 67-year-old Lovano is a veteran of various musical settings over a long career. His voice is adaptable — but always distinctive. No matter his musical surroundings, there is never any doubt that it is Lovano you are hearing. He can shake things up aplenty, but here he fits in with the program — he maintains a mostly gentle touch. […] It may have ‘Arctic’ in its title, but this disc, recorded last year in the south of France, provides plenty of warmth.

Marcin Wasilewski is a smart, lyrical pianist who can get heated—but never too heated—when the music demands it, and on ‘Arctic Riff’ he leads a spruce, contained trio that has become a mainstay of the decorously modernist record label ECM. With the addition of the saxophonist Joe Lovano, a noted individualist who uncannily finds his place in seemingly any musical situation, the album’s ad-hoc quartet produces a seamless blend of inviting original songs, moody group improvisations, and two invigorating takes on Carla Bley’s evergreen ‘Vashkar.’
Steve Futterman, The New Yorker

Holger True, Hamburger Abendblatt

Both Wasilewski and Lovano bring decades of experience to their collaboration, drawing upon a wealth of straight-ahead post-bop and avant-garde-leaning projects. ‘Arctic Riff’ benefits from both ends of the spectrum with tracks that move from the conventional to the completely abstract. The opening, ‘Glimmer of Hope,’ is a particularly accessible piece, evoking the languid and dusky atmosphere of '70s neo-noir films like ‘Body Heat’ and ‘Chinatown’. […] They also offer two artfully shaded variations of Carla Bley's ‘Vashkar,’ the latter of which finds Kurkiewicz laying down heavy bass chord waves for Lovano and Wasilewski to surf over. They return to languid territory on ‘Old Hat,’ a slow, elegant ballad that sparkles with the saxophonist's swooning tones and the pianist's sun-dappled chords. ‘Arctic Riff’ is an absolutely transfixing collaboration that makes the most of Lovano and Wasilewski's deeply empathetic skills.
Matt Collar, All Music

Belle recontre.
Marc Zisman, Jazz News

His first collaboration with Wasilewski’s trio sounds relaxed yet inspired. The trio, like their mentor Stanko, is best at atmospheric, jagged ballads. On Wasilewski compositions like ‘Glimmer of Hope’ and ‘Old Hat,’ Lovano both complements and extends the trio’s aesthetic domain. He plays these songs with deep feeling, but there is a sense of power in reserve, as if a champion weightlifter is painting watercolors. On other pieces, like ‘L’amour Fou,’ Lovano’s natural aggression is not held back. He rivets Wasilewski’s complicated theme into place.
Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times

Their first-time pairing on the ECM label should be of considerable interest, especially as it reaches across from that more austere Eastern European ethic and Lovano stepping away from his more customary style into warmly woody and exploratory playing to create something mutually challenging which is experimental (the spontaneously improvised ‘Arco’), offers suspended delicacy and impressionist (the gorgeous ‘Fading Sorrow’, the flickering embers of ‘A Glimpse’), more free playing (parts of ‘Cadenza’ which is a beautifully organic ballad) or quietly enchanting (the smoky, opening ballad ‘Glimmer of Hope’). They also offer two treatments of Carla Bley's ‘Vashkar’: the first a subdued outing with Wasilewski to the fore in rippling runs before Lovano's flittering entry at the midpoint; the second variation reverses the order with Lovano peeling a way into the melody before a solo of remarkable, European classical delicacy by Wasilewski. And the busy, angular ‘On the Other Side’ takes a trip onto urban streets where urgency and haste are the defining features. Because of the calibre of these players it goes without saying that this measured, engaging and thoughtful album is highly recommended.
Graham Reid, Elsewhere

The first-time creative teaming of Poland’s Marcin Wasilewski Trio and US tenorist Joe Lovano brings forth special music of concentrated, deep feeling, in which lyricism and strength seem ideally balanced. The alliance plays tunes by Marcin and by Joe, as well as Carla Bley’s classic “Vashkar”, plus collective improvisations with strong input from all four players. Produced by Manfred Eicher, Arctic Riff was recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the south of France in August 2019.

The album opens with Marcin Wasilewski’s rubato ballad “Glimmer of Hope” which, the composer explains, is “based mainly on one motive moving through some tonalities. I was very curious to hear how it would sound with Joe’s tone.” The piano gently prepares for the saxophone’s entry, and Lovano’s very first phrase – underpinned by Michal Miskiewicz’s soulful brushwork - establishes the sensitive atmosphere of intense listening that characterizes the session.

Carla Bley’s “Vashkar” follows, a tune interpreted in many different ways over the last half-century. Marcin, who first heard it on the album Footloose by the Paul Bley Trio with Steve Swallow and Pete LaRoca, finds new possibilities inside the world that Carla’s theme opens up: “I really like Carla’s compositions, and I wanted to play “Vashkar’’s beautiful melody with Joe.” Lovano bears down authoritatively on that melody before the Polish trio unravel some of its implications. Joe had performed Carla Bley’s music as a member of her band in 1983 and, in 1986, with Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra, but the present recording marks a first encounter as player with “Vashkar.”

“Cadenza” is the first, and at nine minutes the longest, of the collective pieces shaped in the moment on Arctic Riff. “On each of our recordings we’ve tried to explore musical areas that we haven’t documented before. There was no preconceived plan at all for the improvised pieces, but just as we were concluding a musical statement together on ‘Cadenza’, I had the feeling that it might be good to take it a little further. In that second, I heard Manfred saying through the headphones, ‘Marcin, please continue.’ That was a special moment, and helped to make the whole thing, spontaneously, a better piece of art.”

Wasilewski’s elegant ballad “Fading Sorrow” finds ways to keep the music fresh inside the song format. Slawomir Kurkiewicz’s bass feature here, soloing against Marcin’s subtle chording and discreet drums, is a highlight. Slawomir is also to the fore in the free piece “Arco” which, as its title implies, takes off from his bowed bass entry. “Free improvisation is a very rewarding experience based on mutual trust and openness,” says Slawomir. “As a working trio we’ve played freely many times and It was so touching to see Joe jumping right in there with such directness and clarity. It is great to hear his voice in such a context.” Lovano’s strengths as a player include his enthusiastic capacity to embrace all the things that jazz has been, including its traditional, modern and experimental expressions.

Joe’s sly, jaunty tenor sets up “Stray Cat Walk”, soon joined on its nocturnal prowl by Slawomir’s bass and Michal’s drums. Michal: “The beauty of Joe’s melodies and his amazing rhythmical flow encourage you as a musician to be more creative and spontaneous.”

“L’amour fou” is a piece Marcin wrote to showcase Lovano’s skills in a fast tempo context; the working title was “Crazy for Lovo”. The tune’s author has a bright sparkling solo here, too, after which Joe takes flight, buoyed by the spirited rhythm section, and Michal also has a brief, adroit solo.

“A Glimpse” is a kaleidoscopic free miniature of shifting focus, highly alert throughout. Miskiewicz: “From my point of view it's necessary to be deeply concentrated on each single note, and to predict somehow what may happen in the next second, few seconds or sometimes imagine the whole sequence.”

A second version of “Vashkar” grants more of the solo space to Lovano. Joe: “’Vashkar’ is a beautiful, expressive piece of music. Each of the two versions has its own feeling, structure and exploration. I’m glad Manfred decided to include both takes. Carla’s music is inspired and inspiring - and I would say the same for the music we created on Arctic Riff.”

Joe wrote “On the Other Side” for the session, “as a contrast to Marcin’s compositions.” It’s a swinging free flowing piece with a specific sequence of events to be followed: “The drums set up the theme which is a question-and-answer exchange between the tenor and drums and the piano trio. A piano and drums duo follows, then adding bass into a trio moment without piano. Piano then re-enters, leading to the final theme with embellishments. The outcome was just what I was hoping for. “

And, finally, there is Marcin’s “Old Hat”, a moving ballad in classic jazz style, with tender solos from both Wasilewski and Lovano, its title referencing both the nostalgic flair of the piece and Joe’s penchant for vintage headgear.

The Wasilewski Trio’s members have been playing together since high school days in Koszalin, Poland; the present line-up was established in 1993. Marcin Wasilewski, Slawomir Kurkiewicz and Michal Miskiewicz first recorded for ECM as members of Tomasz Stanko’s quartet on the album Soul of Things in 2001, soon followed by Suspended Night and Lontano. Previous ECM albums in trio format are Trio (2004), January (2007), Faithful (2011), and Live (recorded 2016, released in 2018). For Spark of Life (2014), the trio was joined by Swedish saxophonist Joakim Milder. Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz and Miskiewicz also appear on Norwegian guitarist Jacob Young’s album Forever Young (2013).

Joe Lovano made his ECM debut in 1981 with Paul Motian’s Psalm. Further recordings with the Motian/Lovano/Frisell are It Should have Happened A Long Time Ago, I Have The Room Above Her, and Time And Time Again. Lovano has also recorded for ECM with John Abercrombie (Open Land, Within A Song), Marc Johnson (Shades of Jade, Swept Away), and Steve Kuhn (Mostly Coltrane). 2019 saw the release of two critically-acclaimed recordings with Lovano – Trio Tapestry, introducing Joe’s trio with Marilyn Crispell and Carmen Castaldi, and Roma, a live album with Enrico Rava, Giovanni Guidi, Dezron Douglas and Gerald Cleaver.

Weitere Aufnahmen mit dem Trio Motian/Lovano/Frisell sind It Should have Happened A Long Time Ago, I Have The Room Above Her, und Time And Time Again. Lovano hat auch Aufnahmen für ECM mit John Abercrombie (Open Land, Within A Song), Marc Johnson (Shades of Jade, Swept Away) und Steve Kuhn (Mostly Coltrane) gemacht. 2019 erschienen zwei von der Kritik gefeierte Aufnahmen mit Lovano - Trio Tapestry, das Joes Trio mit Marilyn Crispell und Carmen Castaldi vorstellt, und Roma, ein Live-Album mit Enrico Rava, Giovanni Guidi, Dezron Douglas und Gerald Cleaver.
