Composer Arvo Pärt and producer Manfred Eicher have maintained their creative partnership for more than thirty years.  Eicher launched ECM New Series in 1984 as a platform for Pärt’s music, bringing the Estonian composer to the world’s attention with Tabula Rasa.  Since that epochal release, all first recordings of Pärt’s major works have been made for ECM, with the composer’s committed participation.  In this special double album, issued on Pärt’s birthday, Eicher revisits episodes from their shared musical quest, evoking fresh associations from juxtapositions of pieces in his dramaturgical sequence, as we are invited to hear the music anew.  Compositions heard here include the legendary ECM premiere recordings of Es sang vor langen Jahren, Für Alina, Mein Weg, Kanon Pokajanen, Silouans Song, Fratres, Alleluia-Tropus, Trisagion, Beatus Petronius,  Wallfahrtslied/Pilgrims‘ Song,  Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten, Magnificat, Festina Lente, Lamentate, Stabat Mater, Da Pacem Domine, and a previously unreleased version of Most Holy Mother of God.       
Die kreative Partnerschaft des Komponisten Arvo Pärt mit dem Produzenten Manfred Eicher besteht nun bereits seit über 30 Jahren. Im Zuge der Veröffentlichung von Arvo Pärts Musik begründete Eicher im Jahr 1984 die ECM New Series und weckte mit der Schallplatte Tabula Rasa zugleich das weltweite Interesse an dem Schaffen des estländischen Komponisten. Seit dieser epochalen Veröffentlichung sind von Pärts Werk ausschließlich Ersteinspielungen auf ECM erschienen – und zwar stets unter der engagierten Beteiligung des Komponisten. Auf diesem Doppelalbum – veröffentlicht anlässlich zu Pärts 80. Geburtstag – reflektiert Eicher Stationen ihres gemeinsamen musikalischen Weges. Die dramaturgische Anordnung der Musik in einer Sequenz eröffnet dem Hörer neue Perspektiven in der Rezeption von Pärts Musik. Zum 80. Geburtstag hat Eicher, Pärts, wenn man so will, Entdecker und Produzent, unter dem Titel ‚Musica Selecta‘ auf zwei CDs eine Art klingendes Reisebuch ihrer gemeinsamen Wegstrecke in 17 Stationen vorgelegt. […] selbst wer das Œuvre gut kennt, wird nichts vermissen. Eichers Auswahl ist persönlich und gerade deshalb überaus charakteristisch für Pärts Schaffen. Von ‚Für Alina‘ (1976), dem ersten Stück des einst in der UdSSR als westlich-dekadenter Neutöner diffamierten Komponisten nach achtjährigem Schweigen, bis zu ‚Da Pacem Domine‘ (2004/2007), zeigt die ‚Musica Selecta‘ 17 Versuche von Pärts ‚in Noten gesetzter Suche nach Licht‘, wie der Komponist selbst sein Schaffen umschreibt. Wesentlicher Partner hierbei ist auch Pärts Freund und Wohnungsnachbar in Tallinn, der Dirigent Tonu Kaljuste, der mit diversen baltischen Ensembles interpretatorisch dem Klang der Stille am nächsten kommt, als dessen Quelle und Ziel Pärts Musik gesehen werden kann.

Den Auftakt macht allerdings ein ganz und gar weltliches, wenn auch seltsam entrückt klingendes Stück nach Clemens Brentanos Gedicht ‘Der Spinnerin Nachtlied‘ mit der Mezzosopranistin Susan Bickley, dem Bratscher Vladimir Mendelssohn und dem Geiger Gidon Kremer. Mit ihm begann Eichers Bekanntschaft mit Pärt. Es gibt in seinem ganzen Werk wohl keinen größeren Ohrwurm als diese Motette im Dreivierteltakt – und kein besseres Beispiel dafür, wie sich die Zeiten in seiner Musik überlagern. Ein romantischer Stoff verbindet sich mit spätrenaissancehafter Monodie und zeitgenössischer Intervallik. Wie Pärt hier aus zwei übereinanderliegenden Quarten einen liebeswehen Septimraum umschließt und die Sehnsucht in Dezim- und Nonsprüngen ausmisst, das ist von unvergesslicher Schlichtheit und Raffinesse: Es sang vor langen Jahren, und es singt noch immerzu.

The recorded version of ‘Fratres’ — a classic, featuring the violinist Gidon Kremer and the pianist Keith Jarrett — was joined on the first ECM release, ‘Tabula Rasa,’ by yet another version of ‘Fratres,’ played by the 12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic, not reissued here. But a number of other superb recordings are given renewed life in this context […] And context is clearly intended. Mr. Eicher’s use of the word ‘sequence’ would seem to indicate that the order of play is important, that the pieces speak to one another through their placement. No one understands this music better than Mr. Eicher, and he undoubtedly has his reasons for the placements. The discs do indeed add up to a coherent whole […] For the Pärt novice, these CDs are as good a place to start as any.

“My contact with ECM is beyond categorization,” Arvo Pärt has said. “It is a natural supplement to my composing. Manfred Eicher’s instrument is sound, acoustics, the sounding space which can be heard only by him. He hears in a special way and his records are a result of this hearing. What I call a piece of art made by Manfred is actually a rich and sensitive complex of hearing, thinking, feeling, taste and artistic skill, a whole philosophy. The spirit behind Pärt’s sparsely-notated music can prove elusive for interpreters, and what appears simple on the page may prove, in practice, to be anything but simple. As Eicher often remarks, quoting Valéry, “nothing is more mysterious than clarity”. In his liner note the producer observes that “new music needs its own space in which to sound, to breathe, to flower. That has been one of our considerations throughout our long close-running collaboration, as well as the detailed attention to the needs of Arvo Pärt’s meticulously-placed sounds and silences, and the particular care in the choice of musicians.” The search for the appropriate sounding space for individual compositions has led Eicher and Pärt to visit churches, recital rooms and studios across Europe, and the pieces here were variously recorded in Basel, Bonn, Frankfurt, Lohja, London, St. Gerold, Sindelfingen, Stockholm, Stuttgart and Tallinn, between 1983 and 2011.
As for the performers, documentation of Pärt on ECM started with the recording of Fratres with Gidon Kremer and Keith Jarrett joining forces for the first (and so far only) time and has expanded to embrace many musicians who have, in turn, become closely associated with Pärt’s music. These have included the Hilliard Ensemble, the British vocal group whose pure approach to early music was to prove eminently adaptable to Pärt’s timeless oeuvre as the previously unreleased version of Most Holy Mother of God here attests.
 
When ECM began to record Arvo Pärt’s work, Estonia was part of the Soviet Union, and Pärt’s affirmation, in his music, of his Christian faith was viewed as political provocation by the communist authorities. In this period, Pärt’s pieces could not get a hearing in his homeland. The picture changed with Estonian independence in 1991, with a new generation of musicians emerging, eager to play the music. A strong alliance was forged between Pärt and conductor Tõnu Kaljuste. Under his direction the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra became exemplary interpreters of Pärt’s musical thought, and both choir and orchestra made their debut recordings with ECM New Series.
 
Kaljuste underlines the importance of the ECM albums by curating a series of concerts in Tallinn, Paide and Riga throughout September, as part of the Arvo Pärt Days celebrating the composer’s 80th birthday. Headlined Monumental Albums, the concerts present performances of all pieces on the original recordings. Alina, Tabula Rasa, and Orient & Occident are featured at the first event at Tallinn’s Noblessner Foundry (September 2). Trivium and Arbos are played at the Nigluiste Church, Tallinn (September 3), and Lamentate and In Principio reprised at the Noblessner Foundry (September 4). Kanon Pokajanen and Litany are performed at Jaani Church, Tallinn (September 5), and Passio at the Oliveste Church, Tallinn (September 6). The Jaani Church is also the venue for performances of Te Deum (September 7) and Miserere (September 9). Events on Pärt’s September 11 birthday include a Tabula Rasa performance in Päide, the composer’s birthplace, and the series concludes with Adam’s Lament at the Riga Dome Cathedral on September 26.

Der Geist hinter Pärts sparsam notierter Musik erschließt sich manchen Interpreten nur schwer, und was auf dem Notenblatt einfach erscheint, erweist sich in der Praxis mitunter als wesentlich komplexer. Eicher zitiert in diesem Zusammenhang gern Paul Valéry: „Nichts ist geheimnisvoller als die Klarheit“. In seinem Begleittext konstatiert der Produzent, dass „originäre Musik eines eigenen Raumes bedarf, in dem sie erklingen, atmen und sich entfalten kann. Diesen Raum zu schaffen wurde zur Maxime unserer nun schon so lange währenden engen Zusammenarbeit. Der Raum ist die Voraussetzung dafür, den Klangschöpfungen und der Stille, die dieser Musik eigen ist, mit größter Wachheit und Aufmerksamkeit begegnen zu können. Diese Voraussetzung ist ebenso wesentlich wie die Auswahl der Musiker“. Die Suche nach geeigneten Klangräumen für bestimmte Kompositionen führte Eicher und Pärt in Kirchen, Konzertsäle und Studios in ganz Europa. Die hier versammelten Stücke wurden zwischen 1983 und 2011 in Basel, Bonn, Frankfurt, Lohja, London, St. Gerold, Sindelfingen, Stockholm, Stuttgart und Tallinn aufgenommen.
 
Die Dokumentation der Werke Pärts auf ECM begann mit den Aufnahmen für Fratres, bei denen es zur ersten (und bisher einzigen) Zusammenarbeit von Gidon Kremer und Keith Jarrett kam. Die bisher unveröffentlichte Version von Most Holy Mother of God auf diesem Album belegt dies auf eindrucksvolle Weise.
 
Zu Beginn der Zusammenarbeit mit ECM gehörte Estland noch zur Sowjetunion, und Arvo Pärts musikalisches Bekenntnis zum christlichen Glauben wurde von den kommunistischen Machthabern als politische Provokation angesehen. In jener Zeit durfte es für Pärts Musik in seiner Heimat kein Publikum geben. Dies änderte sich, als Estland 1991 unabhängig wurde und eine neue Generation von Musikern auf den Plan trat, die darauf brannte, seine Werke zu Gehör zu bringen. Besonders starke Bande entwickelten sich zwischen Pärt und dem Dirigenten Tõnu Kaljuste, unter dessen Leitung der Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir und das Tallinn Chamber Orchestra zu richtungsweisenden Interpreten der musikalischen Ideenwelt Pärts wurden. Beide Ensembles gaben ihr Debüt auf ECM New Series.
 
Kaljuste unterstreicht die Bedeutung des ECM-Katalogs mit Konzerten in Tallinn, Päide und Riga im Rahmen des Festprogramms zu Ehren von Pärts 80. Geburtstag. Unter dem Titel Monumental Albums werden alle Stücke der Originalalben live zu hören sein. Den Beginn machen am 2. September Alina, Tabula Rasa und Orient & Occident in der Noblessner Foundry in Tallinn. Es folgen Trivium und Arbos in der Niguliste-Kirche in Tallinn (2. September) und Lamentate und In Principio in der Noblessner Foundry (4. September). Kanon Pokajanen und Litany werden am 5. September in der Jaani-Kirche und Passio in der Oliveste-Kirche (beide in Tallinn) gespielt. Die Jaani-Kirche ist auch Schauplatz der Aufführungen von Te Deum (7. September) und Miserere (9. September). Am 11. September, Pärts Geburtstag, wird Tabula Rasa in seiner Heimatstadt Päide zu hören sein. Den Abschluss der Konzertreihe bildet Adam’s Lament im Dom von Riga am 26. September.
 
Musica Selecta ist für Einsteiger eine ideale Einführung in Pärts Werk auf ECM, lädt aber auch den Pärt-Kenner ein, die Musik durch die besondere Reihung der Stücke neu und andersartig zu hören.
