With In Line, Bill Frisell’s first solo record, the American guitarist epitomized the new generation of guitar players of the time, who were equally influenced by rock and folk music as well as jazz, renouncing what had previously been the traditional idiom of the jazz guitar. Frisell’s use of vibrato and swell sounds and his building up layers of sounds outlined what was to become his style and trademarks. Occasionally Arild Andersen’s bass provides an earthly basis for the guitar’s gliding tones. According to a NME review of the time, on the album “the guitarist paints a genteel portfolio of sketches. Reflection and recollection entwine abound the tones.”
