Makrofauna is the ECM debut of Vilde&Inga, a young string duo playing acoustic free improvised music, featuring violin and double bass. By exploring nontraditional approaches to the instruments, the duo greatly expands its timbral palette. The wide horizons of colour allow the music to develop slowly and organically, yet with a keen underlying sense of compositional form. Vilde Sandve Alnæs and Inga Margrete Aas are classically trained musicians from Norway, who started to play together in 2010. Both musicians have studied at The Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where this album was recorded in the summer of 2012.

“Makrofauna” is the ECM debut of Vilde&Inga. Our band name is written without spaces, they advise, and perhaps this is apt, for the acoustic free improvised music of this young Norwegian string duo conveys a sense of creating with a group mind rather than in the conversational or dialogic modes of jazz, even experimental jazz. Violinist Vilde Sandve Alnæs and bassist Inga Margrete Aas explore the texture of their music together, share the silences, and, as they bring extended techniques to bear on the material, a listener’s attention will be drawn more to the complex grain of the sound: the whole sound, rather than its individual components.

And yet, as liner note writer Martin Rane Bauck points out, there are sometimes divisions of responsibility, when violin “floats over the steady grounds” of the bass, for instance. “But the dark beauty of the music lies just as much in the violin refusing to be violin, the double bass refusing to be double bass. Using the outer limits of the instruments’ possibilities, the duo conjures a richness of nuance and detail worthy of ensembles of far greater size.” In investigating non-traditional approaches to the instruments, the duo expands its timbral palette. The wide horizons of colour allow the music to develop slowly and organically, but with a keen underlying sense of compositional form.

Vilde Sandve Alnæs and Inga Margrete Aas are classically trained musicians from Norway, who started to play together in 2010. Both musicians have studied at The Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where this album was recorded in the summer of 2012. They have given concerts in Norway and internationally, and have also collaborated with improvisers including Sidsel Endresen, Ingar Zach, Christian Wallumrød, Ivar Grydeland, Henrik Munkeby Nørstebo, Xavier Charles, Espen Reinertsen, Eivind Lønning and the quartet Dans les Arbres.

Both Vilde Sandve Alnæs and Inga Margrete Aas are members of the classical chamber orchestra Ensemble Allegria. Vilde performs also as a solo improviser, and Inga plays with the trio As Deafness Increases, with trombonist Henrik Munkeby Nørstebo and guitarist Rudolf Terland Bjørnerem.

Since autumn 2013 Vilde&Inga have been resident in Palestine, where they are teaching (both improvisation and classical music) and giving concerts throughout the region, most recently in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Bethlehem and Nablus.
