Messiaen (1908-92) is one of the most important composers of the 20th Century. For over 40 years he was organist at Saint-Trinité de Paris. Messiaen’s love of organ music is reflected in the masterpieces he wrote for that instrument. These nine meditations are his penultimate organ work, written in 1969. Christopher Bowers-Broadbent is a leading proponent of 20th century organ music who has premiered works by Pärt and Glass, among others. His last recording for ECM New Series was music by Gorecki, Satie, Milhaud and Gavin Bryars, described by The Wire as "a thoughtful and stimulating programme, well executed."
