“Starflowers” is a fascinating ECM debut for Norwegian vocalist and kantele player Sinikka Langeland. A folk singer from the forest lands near the Swedish border, Langeland explores in her work the relationship between man and nature. On this disc she sets verse of lumberjack-poet Hans Børli (1918-89), with help from an outstanding ensemble including trumpeter Arve Henriksen, saxophonist Trygve Seim, bassist Anders Jormin and percussionist Markku Ounaskari. Altogether: a marvellous confluence of folk music, sung poetry and Nordic improvisation brilliantly marshalled in Manfred Eicher’s production.

Song after song, the quintet that Langeland put together designed an original and vital sonorous world. … Above all, that which impresses in the CD of the Finnish composer and singer is the variety of tones in the pieces, the great capacity to make flower in every segment of the songs added melodies, derived-rhythms, serpentine sonorous eruptions and solos apparently distant from the melodic cells and underlying metrics. …
Starflowers appears to be not only a work which is beautiful and rich with future, but also launches a humble question: can one escape the excessive current pop productions of varnished background music, cool and chilly, pseudo-elegant, cunning and dead before it lives, to enter in a post-jazz that elaborates its roots without refuting anything and without fear, and make a music that in its refinement doesn’t forget the downbeat, the fundamental beat, and reinvents it?
Starflowers and Langeland respond yes, and it’s a warning to anyone who writes an important disc: don’t neglect originality; it’s an increasingly rare good.

Starflowers ist ein Als-ob-Album, das mit Elementen von Folk und Jazz souverän spielt und dabei Klangbilder von unglaublicher Zartheit und Intensität entwickelt. Sinikka Langeland beschreibt ihr musikalisches Konzept als den Wunsch, „originäre Musik zu schaffen, die in meiner eigenen Umgebung verwurzelt ist, die sich auf lokale Besonderheiten einlässt und die in die Geschichte zurückblickt, um mehr herauszufinden.“ Das klingt so wunderlich wie ihre verwunschene Musik, die … immer wieder das Wunder einer Verschmelzung von Post-Folk und Gegenwarts-Jazz vollbringt. Arve Henriksen und Trygve Seim greifen die Melodiemotive auf und lassen sie zu Hymnen werden, geerdet von Anders Jormins Bass und aufgehellt durch Markku Ounaskaris Perkussion-Sounds. Ein Begriff müsste für dieses Sound-Wunder noch gefunden werden, in jedem Fall aber handelt es sich schlicht und schön um gute, um sehr gute Musik.

Hauchend und schwelgend sind sie das zarteste Bläserduo dieser Tage, der Saxofonist Trygve Seim und der Trompeter Arve Henriksen. … Sängerin Sinikka Langeland ist keine aus der Schublade derjenigen, die nassforsch in populärem Liedgut wildern. Die Mittvierzigerin spielt die 39-saitige Tischharfe Kantele und rückt die kantige Folklore ihrer norwegischen-finnischen Herkunft in Jazznähe. Keine puristische Traditionspflege also, sondern ein behutsam poesievolles Neuverorten – in jedem Falle hörenswert.
