Norwegian musicians Seim and Haltli have collaborated often over the years, and Frode is also a member of Trygve?s ?Sangam? ensemble. But the flexible duo format has provided a particularly useful forum for the exploration of the most divergent music ? from the Armenian folk song that gives the album its title to free play, from Gurdjieff to Bob Marley?s ?Redemption Song?, and new and old tunes by Trgyve – as well as the exploration of sound, the plangent cry of the sax against the accordion?s breathing reeds. The Seim/Haltli duo has been a popular touring unit in recent seasons: this is the first, eagerly-anticipated, recorded documentation of its music.

Das Duo-Album von Trygve Seim und Frode Haltli ist im besten Sinne des Wortes Weltmusik, weil es ohne falsche Ethno-Romantik verschiedene Aspekte globaler Klanganeignung zusammenführt. Unaufdringlich und unprogrammatisch, doch mit einer diskreten Aufrichtigkeit, die man so nur ganz selten findet.

Pure Schönheit ist der gemeinsame Tonfall von Trygve Seim und Frode Haltli. Es verbirgt sich etwas Volksliedhaftes in dieser Musik - Schnittpunkte, an denen sich weltliche und geistliche Musik zum Tanz treffen. Trygve Seim haucht über die hüpfenden Bässe des Akkordeons, verschmilzt mit dessen schwermütigen Dehnungen oder schreitet gefassten Tones zu den Klangfarben eines Instruments: Es ersetzt einen ganzen Bläsersatz. Frode Haltli hält das Gleichgewicht zwischen den Verführungen zur Virtuosität und der Bescheidenheit des Begleiters. Ihr inneres Leben gewinnt die Platte aber aus der Tatsache, dass man den Melodien beim Wachsen zuhören kann.

Die Zeit

“Listen as this reed pipes its plaint/Unfolds its tale of separations”– so begins Rumi’s “The Song of the Reed”. When Trygve Seim and Frode Halti play – activating reeds with lungs and bellows – sounds of saxophone and accordion can be remarkably close, as they draw together the cries of the world. Seim and Haltli explore the similarities between the instruments and the musical history they share. Writing in Jazzwise magazine, UK journalist Geoff Andrew praised a recent Berlin performance by the duo at the appropriately-named Shared Sounds festival. “Trygve Seim and Frode Haltli played a rewarding extended duet that embraced all manner of moods and allusions. The fragmented interplay between saxes and accordion was quite mesmerizingly beautiful.”

The cover shows an open road stretching towards the horizon, and this is music in movement; Its sources include Armenian traditional music (the title track), music of G.I. Gurdjieff (the Greek-Armenian philosopher-mystic who collected traditional material on travels around the Caucasus and the Middle-East), Caribbean Wailers’ reggae (a rubato version of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”), a free waltz with a nod to US singer-songwriter Tom Waits (“Waits for Waltz”), improvisations.... Some favourite pieces are revisited: “MmBall” (by Seim’s drummer Per Oddvar Johansen), Seim’s “Bhavana” and “Airamero” (the latter from the repertoire of Trygve’s old band of the early 1990s, itself strongly ECM-influenced) and more – all tunes newly arranged by Seim and Haltli.
